Woman leading two brown horses

CAROLYN DAVEY

Where the Horses Led Me

Carolyn Davey started two American-bred horses and brought them through the levels of dressage. Both became Horses of the Year. One reached Grand Prix.

Along the way came a marriage, its ending, and fifteen years of living with stage IV cancer. Through it all, there were the horses—and the extraordinary places they led her.

THE STORY

It began with horses.

Carolyn Davey didn't set out to write an extraordinary story. She was too busy living one—raising and training her horses, driving the trailer, finding her way through the demands of competition and the unexpected turns of life.

From the first rides to the Grand Prix arena, Where the Horses Led Me follows a woman who built something remarkable with the horses she loved. There were triumphs worth celebrating, setbacks she could never have anticipated, and moments when the next step was anything but certain.

And always, there were the horses.

Chapter Eight, Prix St. Georges Before I Die

“My partner was Corbu, who is not a horse you drill.

Corbu is bright, sensitive, and quirky. He has a hard spook in him, and no one else I know wants to ride him. At about twelve he became dependable, but he is still not a horse you push or try to tell him his job.

Riding Corbu is a conversation, not a dictatorship.”
